History
Coxell House was built in the 17th Century and extended in the 18th. During the renovation in 2003 the consultant who carried out a full structural survey on the house found evidence of Medieval woodwork in the kitchen which gives us reason to believe that there may have been a dwelling here in the Dark Ages. During the Second World War, a flying bomb landed on the other side of Manor Road, (originally called Coxell Road) towards the roundabout. It demolished several homes and blew out several sections of Coxell House roof, front and side walls. These were repaired post-war, evidenced by new rafters and newer brickwork. A grating covers what appears to be a passage from our dry cellar. Lydd was a notorious smuggling centre in the 17th and 18th Centuries, so who knows what contraband traversed tunnels beneath the House?
